Traditional Music & Dance

New Zealand’s folklore and performing traditions are grounded in the stories of the Māori people, where music, movement, and myth intertwine. The haka—a powerful ceremonial dance—expresses pride, unity, and ancestral strength, while waiata (songs) and poi dancing convey grace and storytelling through rhythm.

Across both Māori and European communities, festivals and gatherings often blend these traditions with modern folk and acoustic music, celebrating connection to land and lineage amid a spirit of openness and respect.

Culteral rootjpg.jpg
Cultural Roots

New Zealand’s identity is deeply shaped by the enduring legacy of the Māori people—navigators, storytellers and guardians of the land—and the waves of European settlers who brought new traditions, languages and influences. The Māori worldview honours whanaungatanga (connectedness), manaakitanga (hospitality) and kaitiakitanga (guardianship of the environment). Meanwhile, European culture, and more recently Pacific and Asian immigration, have woven into the social fabric of the nation, making it a vibrant and multicultural export of ideas and traditions. From the traditional Māori carving, weaving, waiata (songs) and haka (ceremonial dance) to the contemporary blend of food, art and music that reflects Kiwis’ connection to place and ancestry, New Zealand offers a rich cultural tapestry where indigenous heritage and modern cultural expression unite.

DAY 1

Arrive in Nelson, NZ

Welcome dinner & orientation

Event check-in: approx. 4:30pm

Welcome To Nelson, NZ

Art-lovers rejoice! Nelson, the starting city on this tour, is in the sunniest region in New Zealand - the north-west side of the South Island - and is known for its thriving art and music scene. Make your way here by hopping on a quick flight (1hr 25min) from Auckland International Airport. Plan to arrive around noon, check into the hotel and join us for a welcome presentation. If you can make time at the start of your trip, we highly recommend arriving in Nelson one day early. The local team recommends going to the famous Nelson street market and taking a walk to the Centre of New Zealand.

Enjoy dinner and drinks while we review the week's upcoming adventures and introduce you to your Event Director, local team and fellow travelers!
